Hearing Set for Puffer Fish Poisoning Case ; A local man accused of plotting to kill his wife with a deadly toxin for life insurance money will be back in federal court in April.
Edward Bachner IV of Lake in the Hills has been held in Ogle County Jail since investigators discovered he ordered Tetrodotoxin which he allegedly intended to use to kill his wife who he recently took out life insurance policies on. He was arrested in June of 2008 after arriving at the Algonquin UPS store to pick up the toxin.

A status hearing is scheduled for Bachner in U.S. District Court in Rockford at 9 a.m. on April 8 before Judge Frederick Kapala. Bachner ordered the deadly toxin, found naturally in puffer belly fish, under the assumed name Dr. Backer for "marine antitoxin research," according to the 15-count grand jury indictment handed down in November of 2008.

He is also charged with falsley obtaining a $20 million short-term, contingent life insurance policy on his wife in 2007, according to the indictment. Other charges against him include wire fraud and filing a false claim with the Internal Revenue Service.
